This collection of passenger lists is available from the official Canadian Genealogy Centre.

Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official record of immigration during this period; there are no immigrant applications or files.

The lists contain information such as name, age, country of origin, occupation and intended destination. They are arranged by port and date of arrival, with the exception of some years between 1919 and 1924, when an individual Form 30A was used.

The Government of Canada did not keep records of people leaving the country; there are no passenger lists for departures from Canadian ports.

If your ancestors arrived in Canada by ship between 1865 and 1935, this is a great place to start searching.

Contact can be facilitated when adoptees and birth relatives are matched with each other because both have placed their names on the register. Both adoptees and birth relatives can also request searches for the person they are seeking.

In addition, the service provides non-identifying information about each other to adoptees, adoptive parents and birth relatives.

If you’re looking for links to various Canadian censuses a good place to start is the Canada automated genealogy website.

The project is run by volunteers who are collecting information from other sources, such as microfilm, and adding it to their online databases.

Remember it’s an ongoing project which is staffed by volunteers so be patient if what you need isn’t there yet. At the time of writing they had completed the following:

1901 Census
1911 Census

Ongoing projects include
1906 Census
1851 Census

There are several other resources on their website including links to some military and other records of interest to the genealogist.
